Fabrication

Cosira undertakes steel fabrication work for most major engineering houses in South Africa and internationally. As such, its fabrication facilities have to meet global standards of best practice. All steel and metal-cutting processes are fully CNC-operated, and detailed drawings flow from the CAD/CAM system to communicate specifications directly to the CNC equipment. This communication extends throughout the production process, via the Fabtrol and Magellan systems, to the production and tracking of H-sections, the band-saws, angle-iron shearing and the hot-rolling of 'L' shaped sections, and platework or whatever the particular steel or metalwork requirements of a project may be.

All welders employed are certified members of the South African Welding Institute, and the company itself is coded to international standards such as AWSD1.1, ASMEIX, BSEN287, as well as official Canadian Welding Standards.

Cosira has also undergone an extensive expansion of our fabrication capacity. Cosira’s new Vulcania premises - 'Cosira Vulcan' - is one of the most technologically advanced, efficient structural steel facilities in Southern Africa.

The new Cosira Vulcan facility is a fabrication feat accompli for the group. Covering an area of 36 000m2 to accommodate the massive new CNC machinery, handling and manufacturing cells. This 4 500 t/m facility is situated on 150 000m2 of ground to accommodate future expansions. As one of the first CNC, CAD/CAM and fully-automated materials management and handling system for structural steel in the country, the Vulcania facility has four purpose built production bays, one of which will be a purpose-built 'heavy' production bay with a hundred-ton lifting capacity to handle elements for power generation and other large engineering work's. The plant features in-line beam lines, in-line saws, a CNC coping machine, plate-processing machines, CNC plate girder assembly and welding system, submerged-arc welding systems and angle-matics.
