Witbank Mine to get New Lease on Life

Cosira to play an important role in Douglas Mine Optimisation project

21 April, 2009

Cosira International has been awarded the contract for the mechanical and structural work on the BHP-Billiton Douglas Mine Optimisation project’s new Sizer, with Cosira support services on site as soon as the award took place in July 2008. This is according to Cosira project manager Deon Ferreira.

Ferreira states:  “Actual construction of Sizer structurals and mechanicals began in early November, with the end of May, 2010, as the projected completion date for all facets of this project.

Cosira’s capacity and great industry track record were key factors in our being awarded the contract, as the Group has a well-established reputation for reliability and quality in detailing, supply and installation. Our new state-of-the-art Vulcania facility is already operating, and has greatly increased our available tonnage capacity to meet the needs of our customers.”

Projected steel usage on the Sizer installation is currently in the region of 5030 tonnes, with the possibility of an increased scope of work lifting this to 5500 tonnes all-told. The Sizer is to be part of the milling process, sizing the coal that feeds the run-of-mine tip to ensure a consistent product.

Norman Collier, Project Manager at BET (Senior Project Manager), observes:  “We needed a solid, proven contractor to undertake this facet of the project, to ensure that construction runs smoothly and that there are no unnecessary delays in project progress. We chose Cosira for their local and international track record, and their ability to deliver the steel tonnages required.”

Cosira Group CEO John da Silva concludes:  “Our size and business agility grants us considerable capacity and a comprehensive turnkey offering, but we have also never lost the tight control and close communication typical of good smaller organisations. An example of this is our ‘Cosira One’ policy, which ensures just one point of contact per client, for all the turnkey services available within the Cosira Group.

We are extremely proud to have been awarded such a prestigious project as DMO, and it is just one more demonstration of how the Cosira Group is making a substantial impact on the South African steel construction industry. We truly live, and deliver, our ethos of taking full project ownership, quality and service in all that we do.”
